The Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad was organized in 1879. When the Billerica & Bedford failed, the railroad equipment and George Mansfield made the trip to Maine. The largest of the railroads, the SR&RL, ran from Farmington, where it interchanged with the Maine Central, to Strong, Phillips, and Rangeley. Branch Lines included the Franklin & Megantic, the Phillips and Rangeley, and the Kingfield and Dead River. The railroad carried both passengers and freight. It was a big railroad connecting to standard gauge trains. Operations ceased in 1935.
More detailed information on the history of the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad can be found at the SSRL website, as well as the operating schedule for the non-profit railroad. There is also an extensive history at Wikipedia.
