Volunteer

We are a volunteer organization – our volunteers drive the trains, fix the trains, do track work, restore historic equipment, archive records, design and build exhibits; and much more.   Volunteer opportunities are described below.  Please contact Jennifer Halm-Perazone, our Volunteer Coordinator at 207-828-0814 or email.

  • Train Crew – Train rides are the biggest part of our visitors’ experience.  The trains are entirely operated by volunteers.   No prior experience necessary, we provide the training to become a brakeman, conductor or engineer.
  • Railroad Department – Engine and train service, track and  mechanical maintenance  and repair.
  • Facility Management – cleaning and maintaining the premises with minor electrical and plumbing repairs.
  • Education – educating the public is the primary  function of the museum and  includes program development, outreach to  schools and groups, and  interpretation of the museum collection and  exhibits.
  • Museum – collection management involves archiving as well as planning and maintaining displays and exhibits.
  • Restoration – the collection is primarily historic railroad cars needing preservation and some restoration.

Restoration Projects: Engine #7 | Track Work

The five narrow gauge railroads operated in Maine for about 50 years, from the 1880s to the 1930s and a couple into the 1940s.  Some of the original equipment is more than 100 years old.   Preserving the locomotives, passenger coaches, cabooses and other rail cars, along with photos, telegraph equipment, lanterns and other artifacts is half of our purpose as a museum.  Sharing it with the public is the other half.
