We are a volunteer organization – our volunteers drive the trains, fix the trains, do track work, sell tickets, restore historic equipment, archive records, design and build exhibits; and much more. Volunteer opportunities are described below. Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at 207-828-0814 or email. Our growing volunteer section may give you insight into all the things we’re doing, so check in frequently to see what’s new.
- Visitor Services – the front line staff are the most important jobs in the museum, the first and last to interact with most of our visitors. Positions include reception, floor staff, ticket agent and retail clerk.
- Administration and Finance – administrative support functions include office work, communications, planning, and logistics.
- Railroad Department – the largest group of volunteers handles everything involving the operation of our trains, including engine and train service, track and mechanical maintenance and repair.
- Facility Management – cleaning and maintaining the premises with minor electrical and plumbing repairs.
- Education – educating the public is the primary function of the museum and includes program development, outreach to schools and groups, and interpretation of the museum collection and exhibits.
- Restoration – the collection is primarily historic railroad cars needing preservation and some restoration.
- Museum – collection management involves archiving as well as planning and maintaining displays and exhibits.
