Welcome aboard!

History in motion. Affordable family fun.

The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Co. & Museum is dedicated to the preservation, operation, and public education of Maine's especially unique two-foot gauge railway legacy.

Our narrow gauge trains provide big family fun. There is plenty of room aboard the train, with a selection of traditional passenger coaches, open-air cars (weather-dependent), and optional First Class seating.

The operating fleet is composed of lovingly-restored historic steam and diesel locomotives and passenger equipment, as well as faithful replica modern-day recreations. Be sure to also look for a selection of original, restored, and new-build freight equipment and railroad paraphernalia along the line!

The leisurely, daily scenic train ride lasts approximately 40 minutes and travels 1.5 miles (3 miles round trip) along Portland's Eastern Promenade, with delightful views of Casco Bay. Take in the ever-changing scenery from your comfortable seat.

Train crew and/or history docents are available to provide historical information aboard the ride. Trains operates rain, snow, or shine. Well-behaved pets are welcome in Coach Class during our regular-service train rides, provided they are on a leash and are responsive to owner commands.

Before or after your train ride, be sure to visit our fully-stocked gift shop to learn more about our "rolling museum." Restrooms and a changing table are available in the train station.

Visitors should plan approximately 1.5 hours for a visit. We are open year round, with daily service schedule beginning in springtime and lasting through the beginning of November. Special events take place throughout the year.  Ice Cream Trains and Sunset Expresses run on weekend evenings during the warmer months. The magical Polar Express™ is offered weekends during the holiday season.

All tickets are non-refundable, non-transferrable, and non-exchangeable.
